Internet service providers (ISPs) in Australia have been ordered to ban 7 new additional gambling sites this week by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA).
The 7 new casino sites to join the ever-growing blacklist of gambling websites are Ninja Spins, CasinoAus, AU Online Casino, Australian Casino Sites, Pokies Parlour, and Pokies Online Casino. The ACMA’s investigations into these sites found that they were operating in violation of the Interactive Gambling Act of 2001.
The ACMA reported in a statement: “Website blocking is one of a range of enforcement options to protect Australians against illegal online gambling. Website blocking provides a valuable opportunity to alert the public to illegal gambling services through the messaging that appears when there is an attempt to access the site.”
The ACMA also urged consumers to question the validity of certain services, saying that even if a business appears to be legitimate, it may still lack critical customer safeguards, putting customers who use illicit gambling services in danger of losing their money.
Since November 2019, the ACMA has issued ISP blocking orders for 426 gambling websites. In addition, another 160 service providers have left the Australian market following the ACMA’s stricter enforcement of offshore gambling regulations.
According to data released last month by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, 11% of Australians have played real money pokies at some point in the past six months. This represents a further increase over the 8% reported in 2020.
